Welcome to the Greater Birmingham Mathematics Partnership website. The Greater Birmingham Mathematics Partnership, or “GBMP” for short, is dedicated to improving mathematics education in the greater Birmingham, Alabama region and contributing to better mathematics teaching and learning well beyond.  On the following pages, you’ll find information about our project’s beginnings, evolution, funding, design, constituent components, activities, and plans. You will also find links to resources, opportunities, and other sites of potential interest. Through this website we hope to provide information that is valuable to anyone who may share an interest in our project and/or improving mathematics education.

 GBMP Project Spotlight

From June 19th - June 29th, 2012, GBMP held its professional development summer courses for local teachers at Irondale Middle School.  Five courses were run simultaneously over the 2-week period and included Patterns I, Patterns II, Numerical Reasoning, and a new course called Reasoning About Data.  In total, 168 participants (teachers) completed a course this summer.  National Science Foundation funding supported about a third of the teachers, while grants from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and the Malone Family Foundation provided the funding for the other two thirds. Our sincere thanks to these sponsors and to our wonderful hosts at Irondale Middle School, Principal Phyllis Montalto, Becky McGowan in the office, and Michelle Shelton, head custodian.
