GBMP MST Uswatte Delivers Mathematics Colloquium

On Friday, April 9, 2010, GBMP Mathematics Support Team Teacher Dilhani J. Uswatte, a 2009 Milken National Educator Award recipient and inductee into the Alabama Teacher Hall of Fame was the featured speaker at the weekly UAB Mathematics Colloquium.  The title of her presentation was "Promoting Positive Attitudes Towards Mathematics and Improving Quantitative Literacy in Education".  To an audience of UAB faculty from various fields including Mathematics, Psychology and Education, undergraduates, and graduate students, Mrs. Uswatte  discussed the strategies she uses in her 8th grade classroom at Berry Middle School (Hoover) to inspire a positive disposition towards mathematics and improve quantitative literacy amongst her students.  She shared examples of student work, lesson plans, and general teaching practices to prepare students for the 21st century.  Mrs. Uswatte has been a standout participant in the Greater Birmingham Mathematics Partnership and she also used the opportunity to speak her experiences with the project.
