GBMP Summer Courses in 2010 reach over 250 Teachers

The Greater Birmingham Mathematics Partnership held its annual summer courses for teachers June 1-11 and July 6-16, 2010.  Instructors from the Mathematics Education Collaborative (MEC) taught four sections of Patterns I and 1 section each of Numerical Reasoning, Geometry, and Patterns II.  In these 7 courses,  a total of 261 teachers participated from 68 different schools and 14 distinct school districts or independent schools.  Participating teachers teach grades ranging from Kindergarten to 12th grade.  We were also happy to include, for the first time this year, trainers from the UAB AMSTI program.

In total, these teachers received over 15,000 hours of professional development through these courses.   Generous funding from the Malone Family Foundation to Birmingham-Southern College, again this year, made possible the full participation of 140 Kindergarten - Fifth Grade teachers, while funding from the National Science Foundation sponsored 126 teachers from primarily middle school classrooms.  The 261 teachers who attended GBMP summer courses received up to a $900 stipend for attending each 2 week session, had the tuition costs of $750 per teacher paid for them, and were provided with a kit of materials (manipulatives) valued at up to $310.

Our thanks to all the teachers who attended this year and the course instructors.  And a very special thanks to our friends at Deer Valley Elementary School, and the Hoover School District, who graciously and generously donated classrooms and equipment for our use for 5 of the last 6 years, making the offering of GBMP summer professional development courses possible.
