Fall 2008 Community Mathematics Nights continue to attract crowds. Attendance to date nears 5,000.
In late September 2008, GBMP held Community Mathematics Nights (CMNs) for the public in 3 different communities: Pleasant Grove, Trussville, and the Riverchase area of Hoover. In early November, 3 more CMNs were held at Oak Grove High School, Bumpus Middle School (Hoover) and Irondale Middle School. Three of these 6 sessions attracted crowds of more than 250. At one, attendance topped 300. In Trussville, Dr. Parker's presentations have become so popular that they now have become standing room only events, forcing us to look for bigger venues for our CMNs planned for that community in the future. At these 6 sessions, total attendance was 1,059. The Greater Birmingham Mathematics Partnership has now presented 47 of these Community Mathematics Nights since it started offering them in January of 2005. Total attendance at our Community Mathematics Nights has now reached over 4,900. Nearly 1,500 parents and other attendees have been surveyed and nearly 90% have rated the Community Mathematics Nights they attended as either Informative or Extremely Informative. When they were asked what new insights they gained from the most recent sessions here's what some parents said:
"How incredibly important these skills are for parents."
"I as a parent need more help in order to to help my child."
"efficient thinking"
"Depending on the way ideas are presented, my child could learn higher math earlier than I did."
(Regarding Algebra) "It's not as hard as I was making it."
"Play games to teach math!"
"I can explore patterns in the addition table with my 1st grader."
"I can help my kids!"
